Prayer Shawl Ministry

Compassion and the love of knitting/crocheting have been combined into a prayerful ministry and spiritual practice which reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace, as well as in celebration and joy. Many blessings are prayed into every shawl.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry at First Lutheran Church was initiated in 2005 under the leadership of Loretta Lambrecht, Parish Nurse Coordinator.  It is based the program developed by Janet Bristow and Victoria Galo, two graduates of the 1997 Women's Leadership Institute at The Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut. About 20 women, ages 20 to 80+ have been crocheting or knitting prayer shawls which are given to members in need of a special touch of love. Infant baptismal shawls are pure white, while adult and child shawls are made in many colors and patterns. The shawl maker weaves prayers of comfort and healing into the shawls as they create them. Recipients report feeling the unconditional embrace of a sheltering, loving God.  Heartwarming thank yous and a deepening of their own prayer lives are benefits that prayer shawl members readily share.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry group meets monthly at 2:30 p.m. on the 4th Thursday of the month, excluding June, July, and August.

For more information, contact Ruth Hanson, Parish Nurse Coordinator.

Prayer shawls wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify.
Those who have received these shawls have been uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to fly above their troubles..."
