Confirmation Requirements

What is Required of the Kids?

Each week, your child’s progress will be tracked and posted on the wall outside the Celebration Hall with the following requirements.

Students are required to attend all Confirmation sessions. If a session is missed, the student will be asked to watch the video at home or at another time, fill out the learner sheet, and return it with parent’s signature.

Participate in service projects. Four opportunities will be offered throughout the year and your child is expected to participate in three of them.

Each grade will have a retreat that is required. If missed, a make-up project will be available.

Small group participation and positive contributions in small group discussions.

Keep a journal. Each week, your child is asked to write 3/4 of a page of how they see God at work in his/her life. The journal entries will be reviewed by the small group leader. Journals will be provided.

Read “The Story.” Read the chapter of The Story before Wednesday’s class. They are not long. Each student will get a Teen Story Bible to take home.

9th Grade Only:

Secure an adult mentor to meet with your child. (See below)

A final project that will tell their own story. This project will be worked on throughout the year and may take the form of a painting, poem, short story, play, movie, power point, etc. The kids will be encouraged to be creative as they look for ways in which God’s story intersects with their story.

Mentor Requirements: We are asking 9th graders to secure their own mentors this year. If you have trouble finding one, we have names of people who have agreed to fulfill that role. A mentor should be:

Someone your child feels comfortable with. Does not need to be a member of First Lutheran. Can be a relative, neighbor, friend, etc.

Is over the age of 18.

Someone who can commit to meeting with your child once a month and be his or her friend and confidante. The first Wednesday of each month is set aside for meeting with mentors, but it can happen at other times at other places. You will fill out a form to track mentor meetings.

  Be willing/comfortable talking about faith.

What is Required for Parents?

In the baptismal vows, you made the promise to faithfully bring your child to God’s house for worship, place the Bible in his or her hands, and provide instruction in the Christian faith. Confirmation is an important step in fulfilling those promises. It is our expectation that you will:

Attend Sunday Worship with your child and sit together as a family. While we will not be formally tracking church attendance as in years past, it is encouraged and expected that you will worship on Sunday mornings.

Bring your child to Wednesday Worship. The kids will sit in worship with their small group leaders.

Attend “The Story” Large Group Study. Every Wednesday at 6 p.m., Pastor Marty will host a large group study in the Adult Ed Room. You do not have to go, you get to go. How cool is it that you and your child are learning the same Story together? Suddenly places like the car or the kitchen table become holy spaces as conversations around The Story take place.

Keep your young people accountable by making Confirmation an important part of their week.

Say yes. We are still in need of small group leaders and parent helpers.

What You Can Expect from Us

Regular communication. It is our goal to communicate with you weekly via e-mail. Please make sure we have your e-mail account or let us know if there is a better way for us to communicate with you.

We will be prepared. Each week, worship and small group leaders and activities will be ready to go!

We will respect and love your kids. We know all families are different, and we respect each of you and ask that you in turn respect us and any hard decisions that may need to be made.

Your kids will be safe here. We will do all we can to ensure your child is safe here, not only physically but spiritually and emotionally as well.
