2010 Vision Slovakia
For the last few years, First Lutheran Church members have been living out their faith in and around Martin, Slovakia. Our mission trips have been involved with assisting at Vacation Bible School and more recently has expanded to teaching English to adults and teenagers.
Next summer's mission trip has been tentatively scheduled for July 9-27, 2010. This year, the plan is for 5-7 individuals to make up the team to represent First Lutheran Church.
There are application forms available on the counter outside the church office. We encourage interested individuals to complete and return it to the envelope on the clipboard no later than December 23, 2009. Although not a requirement, pertinent skills include teaching experience or musical talent. Any experience in teaching English as a second language is very helpful. For more information, contact Julie Johnson at 701-388-4781 (jandcjohnson@cableone.net) or Craig Johnson at 701-799-1108 (cmjohnson@hotmail.com).

With the generosity of First Lutheran Church and the Lee Estate, members of First Lutheran Church carried the Gospel message or learned first hand about spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Here are just a few of our gifts:

During the school year, Pastor Fabian's church in Carmen Bajo, Quito, Ecuador provides meals for the children of the area through Compassion International. They currently are feeding 120 children a noon meal three days a week; for many of these children it may be their only meal of the day. A church in Toronto has pledged the funds to pay for a fourth day each week and at their August meeting, the Global Missions Committee approved $3360 to fund the noon meal for the 5th day of the week.

Global Mission received a request from Eunice Olson, wife of Pastor Tom Olson, in Hawley, MN for financial assistance with her airfare to return to Central African Republic (C.A.R.). Eunice is assisting in the construction and development of a health care center in Gallo, C.A.R. about 30 miles from the Women's Center that we have supported. She serves under the auspices of Global Health Ministries, in Fridley, MN.  Global Health Ministries' mission is to continue the healing ministry of Jesus Christ by enhancing health care programs of Lutheran churches around the world. The Global Missions Committee voted to fund Eunices' airfare to C.A.R. and she will be gone until May 2010.

How can I support Global Mission?

You can pray for mission personnel.
You can financially support FLC missions
You can join the Global Mission Committee
You can participate as a short term missionary

Are Missionaries Still Needed?
Yes!!  Companion churches continue to ask the ELCA to provide mission personnel with specific skills.  ELCA missionaries serve as seminary professors, teachers, librarians, counselors, accountants, computer consultants, and pastors, among others. Check www.elca.org/globalserve to see current openings for long-term and short-term international mission appointments and
self-supporting volunteer positions.

How Can I become a Missionary?
ELCA Global Mission manages the process of promoting opportunities for service, and the recruitment, screening and appointment of candidates.  All persons
serving in international settings with the ELCA are considered missionaries regardless of the length or type of service.

If you would like to explore global mission service, check the latest listing that provides information about volunteer, young adult, two-year and long-term service.  An application that you can download from the link is a necessary step that will begin the process of exploring global mission service.

Ways First Lutheran Church takes part in Global Mission
The ELCA calls missionaries who serve God and witness to God’s good news.

The ELCA supports evangelism with direct grants and personnel.  First Lutheran distributes funds from an estate as well as from our own budget.  We support projects and missionaries here and abroad, including Slovakia, Mexico, Ecuador, China, Philippines, and Madagascar.  In 2007, over $20,000 was distributed to such organizations as World Mission Prayer League in the Phillipines, International Teams in Quito, Mexico,  WorldVenture in Spain, and Scandia House Ministry.

The ELCA provides leadership training for companion churches.

“The Great Commission”

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.  And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28: 19-20

Global Mission Committee meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 a.m.
If you would like more information or would like to support mission work (local and global projects, trips and spreading God’s word), please feel free to contact Larry Wild, chairman.
