Devotion for January 26, 2012

Have you ever come to a point where you needed to make a decision and once you made it you knew there was no turning back?

I remember my second year in the parish ministry.  Our church needed more space for worship seating and for classes.  We took a vote about building an addition.  It passed by one vote.  That doesn't give a 26 year old pastor much confidence.

I remember a summer evening when the church members and I were to begin the job of tearing off a portion of the church to make ready for the contractors to begin their work.  I was the first one on the scene and I held in my hand a wrecking bar.  Dare I begin?  Once those boards started coming off there would be no turning back.  I felt very much alone at that point.  I saw in my mind's eye all of those who had vocally opposed the matter.  I kept looking up the street to see if my fellow laborers were coming.  But not yet.  So I started with my wrecking bar and there was then no turning back.

The building was built and the opposition voices died down.  What was it Jesus said? "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."    You can't plow straight if you look back.

If you are facing a decision from which there is no turning back,  spend much time in prayer with our Lord and hopefully you will get an answer about your decision.

PRAYER:  Lord Jesus, we pray for everyone who is at a decision point in their lives, guide them steadily into their future.  Amen.
