At First Lutheran Church (FLC), we often speak about the importance of connecting people—to God and to each other. Sometimes, those connections reach farther than we ever expect. Jane’s story is a beautiful reminder that faith and fellowship can thrive, even across great distances.
Jane lives in a rural community more than two and a half hours from Fargo. With limited opportunities for local worship and study, she’s longed for deeper spiritual connection and a sense of community. Whenever she visits family in Fargo, she makes it a priority to attend worship at First Lutheran. Over time, the messages, the music, and the warmth of the congregation made her feel like she had found a spiritual home.
On a recent visit, Jane took a simple step that would lead to something greater—she filled out a “Connect” card. On it, she shared how much she appreciated the church’s ministry and asked a heartfelt question: Was there any way she could join a women’s Bible study from home?
Pastor Steph received Jane’s request and saw an opportunity for connection. She passed the information along to Alyssa, who leads women’s Bible studies at FLC. Inspired by Jane’s desire to grow in God’s Word, Alyssa teamed up with our tech team to find a solution. They worked together to make it possible for Jane to join the upcoming Bible study on the Book of James via Zoom.

Now, each week, Jane logs in from her home and becomes part of the circle. She can see and hear the other participants—and they can see and hear her. She shares in the group’s video lessons, joins the lively discussions, and participates in prayer just like everyone else. Though a screen separates them physically, spiritually, the connection is as real and meaningful as ever.
Jane’s experience reminds us that community and connection aren’t limited by geography. When hearts are united in Christ, distance becomes just a detail. We’re grateful for technology, for the dedication of our leaders, and most of all, for people like Jane who show us what it means to seek and share God’s love—wherever we are.
