Lord of All

by Michael Olson

I am coming to gather all nations and tongues and they shall come and shall see my glory.
Isaiah 66:18

There is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him.
Romans 10:12

As I begin today's devotional message, I need to wish Happy Anniversary to two couples:

  1. my sister and brother-in-law who are celebrating 39 years of marriage,
  2. and to Gary and Ruth Hanson who are celebrating 50 years of marriage.

May God's blessings be on both of these couples, as well as all couples who celebrate wedding anniversaries today and every day!

In spite of everything that has happened during the past several months in the United States and throughout the world with the coronavirus pandemic and many other events, it is comforting to read the text from Romans for today:  the same Lord is Lord of all. He shows no partiality. He does not compare people. He does not show favoritism. However each of us may or may not feel about things, the Lord IS Lord of all, and those are words we need to hear now more than ever before.

Of course, when reading the words from Romans, I was reminded of a song written by Phill McHugh. The words still ring true today even though he wrote this song a while back -- quite a while back:

Lord of all of the heights whose faith can lift the trusting heart.
Lord of all of the depths where fear would tear such faith apart.
Lord of all of the nations quick to anger bearing arms.
Lord of all of each child held by its mother safe from harm.

Lord of all of all seen and unseen things, of a universe that sings and calls you Lord of all.
Lord of all of the power not to sin; you have always been and always will be Lord of all.

Lord of all of a peace that we can draw with every breath.
Lord of all of provision for each need in life and death.
Lord of all of the turnings of the seasons and the earth.
Lord of all of the love that purchased man a second birth.

Lord of all of all seen and unseen things, of a universe that sings and calls you Lord of all.
Lord of all of the power not to sin; you have always been and always will be Lord of all.
Lord of all, in grateful praise we call you Lord of all.
Lord of all, in grateful praise we call you Lord of all.  Lord of all.

May you be strengthened and encouraged and loved and protected by the Lord of all, this day and forevermore.
