Bless My Soul

by Intern Pastor Katie Kringstad

One of my favorite songs is “10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)” by Matt Redman. I love this song because it reminds me that we are all souls not just bodies, titles, material things, but souls. Souls don’t have an age, a race, or a gender - they are who you are in your heart, not what the person next to you sees but who you really are, and that is someone beautifully created by God.

The definition of soul is: “The spiritual or immaterial part of a human being or animal, regarded as immortal. A person's moral or emotional nature or sense of identity.”

The immaterial part of a human; it has always intrigued me that you can’t see the soul. I have imagined in my mind what one would look like and an image similar to this one comes to mind. A beautiful, free, light of love.

My favorite verse of the song is, “And on that day when my strength is failing, The end draws near, And my time has come, Still my soul will sing your praise unending, Ten thousand years, And then forevermore, Forever more.”

The soul is unending and so we should take time to care for it because in the end that is all we have and all that we are. Psalm 62:1 says, “Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.” So, in times when life, stress and brokenness overwhelm you, find rest in God. Find a place that brings you peace and open your soul to God’s love, grace, and strength. Let us also try to lift the souls of others with overwhelming kindness. Proverbs 16:24 says, “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” I pray that we can take time to care for our souls and that we can look past the exterior of others to see who they truly are, beautiful creations of a loving God.

“Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.”
– 3 John 1:2
