When I was growing up, my mom had a cross-stitched picture that hung in our laundry room. It read, “Cleaning and scrubbing can wait ‘til tomorrow, for babies grow up we’ve learned to our sorrow. So quiet down cobwebs and dust go to sleep, I’m rocking my babies and babies don’t keep.”
As I hurry around to get one more thing done before the clock strikes midnight on the 24th, I am thinking about that picture hanging in my childhood home. I desperately want to remember that the one thing I am called to do as a follower of Jesus is to hold onto him and be held by him. To quiet my heart and prepare for his coming; a coming that rocked the world once and promises to do it again. This one thing is the only thing you and I need. You see, Christmas will come with or without the peanut butter kiss cookies, the perfectly decorated tree, and the extra stocking stuffers. It did 2,000 years ago, and it will again today. You don’t need one more thing, you just need to sit down, open your hands, and close your eyes and whisper, “Come, Lord Jesus, Come.” May the power of the One God fill you with the peace of the Christ child this Christmas Day and gift to you, his holy presence.
