Two Turtle Doves

by Erik Carlson

“On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me two Turtle Doves...”

Did you know that the 12 days of Christmas start on Christmas day? So today the 26th is the second day of Christmas. I’m afraid to admit I thought it was leading up to Christmas for about twenty years. The Turtle Dove is mentioned 15 times in the Bible, but most of those times it is in reference to providing a sacrifice to God (one of those being Joseph and Mary for the birth of Jesus). In the Song of Solomon however, it says this: The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.

Turtle Doves symbolize many good things. They often symbolize innocence, purity, enduring love, and devotion. They symbolize these things because they mate for life, they work together in raising their young, and building their home together. The Turtle Dove is a wonderful model for us to strive towards!

Turtle Doves make me think about Christmas mostly because of the movie “Home Alone 2.” Kari, Hugo and I just watched that as one of our Christmas movie days. If you don’t recall Kevin is given a pair of Turtle Dove Christmas ornaments by the owner of the Duncan Toy Store. He tells Kevin to take them and give one to a very special friend, and as long as they both have them, they will be friends for life. If you recall Kevin ends up giving his other turtle dove to the “pigeon lady” (she actually never has a name in the movie), because she saved his life from the “sticky/wet bandits.” And she was being kind to him at a time when he was terrified of being in the park all alone.

On this second day of Christmas, why don’t you give your friends or loved ones a call and tell them exactly what they mean to you. Tell them how much you appreciate having them in your life, and that you love them.

In peace,
