A Promise

by Erik Carlson

Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.
Matthew 3:13

On a Saturday a few weeks ago, Kari and I made a promise. We made several promises on behalf of our beautiful son Hugo Bruce Carlson. Together with our parents, sponsors, and Pastor Laurrie, we made several promises to God during Hugo’s baptism.

It certainly wasn’t quite how I imagined we would baptize our first child, but man was it absolutely perfect. With some friends and family watching via a zoom call, we gathered around the baptismal font, Kari holding Hugo, and made promises. We promised to teach Hugo about God, we promised to put the Bible in his hands, we promised to bring him to church, and to support his relationship with God forever. As Pastor Laurie said the words “we baptize you in the name of the father, and the son, and the holy spirit,” I was able to wash the water over Hugo’s head and mark him with the sign of the cross. It was an experience I will never forget.

As I am working towards entering seminary, this was another one of the many “God winks” I have experienced in the last few years. I remember thinking, “when I become a pastor, I will get to do this over and over again?” It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I intend to tell Hugo all about it for the rest of my life. I can't wait to hear him say, “dad… again with this story?!” It has made me want to ask my mom about how I was during my baptism, who all was there, was I quiet (doubtful), did I cry, did I laugh, or was I screaming?

What are things you were told about your baptism? What were some things that stick out to you about your childrens' baptisms or any baptism you have witnessed?

In peace,
