Savor Every Moment

by Marlee Robertson

A few weeks ago I was following a supply truck of some kind. The slogan on the back of the truck was “faster, simpler, easier.” My immediate reaction was, “sign me up.” A few minutes passed and oddly I was still thinking about it. When I live my life looking for the next thing, I miss my actual life. The one I am currently living.

There is a devotional I like called Savor by Shauna Neiquist. She talks about a slow, sweet season. She says, “This is what I know, my life works better a little slower, my family works better a little slower, my marriage works better a little slower.”  Experience tells me to agree with her.

Busy makes life blurry. I picture Wylie coyote and the roadrunner, going at such a frantic pace, the world around them is a blur. And when I get in roadrunner mode I don’t see my people as well, I don’t hear my own soul well, I certainly don’t hear God well.

We were not created to live life in a blurry haze. And most of us were not created to live as a desert monk. So how do we live a balanced life? Let’s take time to carve some deep patterns of activity/rest, listening to God/offering to others. I promise the fruit will be worth it.

Gracious God I don’t want to spend another day chasing after things that don’t satisfy. I pray that I would begin to truly see how high how deep your love is help me to catch glimpses of your mercy. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Matthew 11:28-30 MSG

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us.”
Hebrews 12:1 NRSV

“I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
Ephesians 3:16-19 NRSV
