The Love of God

by Marlee Robertson

The Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love;
therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.
Jeremiah 31:3

Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.
Psalm 136:26

See what great love the Father has lavished on us,
that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
1 John 3:1

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by
grace you have been saved.
Ephesians 2:4-5

I felt compelled to write about the love of God for today’s devotional. For several days, I was armed with my Bible and pen, ready to “hear a word from God.” “What do you want to say through me Lord?” To be clear, I don’t hear God in an audible voice. It’s more like a quiet knowing in my head and heart. I assume that’s how most of us hear God.

Moving on. All I heard was “love.” I prayed, read, listened…”love.” Although true, simply writing - God loves you, now go and love everyone the same way – it is not a compelling devotion. In my scouring the internet, I came across several songs and hymns that tell the story of 'the love of God,' but one stood out. I felt like it was what I was being nudged to share but could not put into words.

The Love of God was written by Fredrick Lehman and his daughter Claudia in 1917. I’m sharing a modern version by MercyMe but it still holds the hymn-like nature. It reminds me of church as a little girl. I felt safe and warm and seen and held…the love of God.
