We miss football, even if we aren’t season ticket holders, we miss the excitement and energy football creates within the community. It gives us something to do together; a common language, and a shared spirit. It makes us feel part of something larger than ourselves.
The 20th-century Spanish philosopher, Jose Ortega y Gasset said, “People do not live together merely to be together, they live together to do something together.” If this is true, simply co-existing on the planet isn’t really the point. The point is to rally together around a common purpose and pursue that purpose with the same passion it takes to win a national championship.
Our sermon series, Live, Love, Lead like Jesus on Broadway, has us fussing with our purpose as the people of God on Broadway. How do we live, love and lead like Jesus in this time and in this place? What unifies us and draws us together to do something we couldn’t or wouldn’t otherwise do on our own? The community of faith has gathered on Broadway for 100 years with the sole purpose of proclaiming Christ alone in word and in deed. Indeed, it is the passion of Christ pursuing us that unites us and gives us the Spirit’s energy to keep doing life together.
Game Day might look and feel different in these days, but there is still kingdom building to do together as we seek to bring people into a relationship with Jesus Christ and help each one grow in the Christian faith. That is a rally cry to cheer for and so in whatever stadium you find yourself in, whatever arenas of influence you have, I pray that you would not simply exist, but purposefully live, love, and lead like Jesus. Go Team!
