Enough

by Shelly Erickson

Do you remember Stuart Smalley from Saturday Live?

The first time I saw this skit I thought it was hilarious. I still find it funny. In psychology this type of self-talk is called self-affirmation. Here’s Merriam Webster's definition of self-affirmation: the act of affirming one's own worthiness and value as an individual for beneficial effect (such as increasing one's confidence or raising self-esteem).

I have owned a few self-affirmation books over the years and was curious how many of these books were available today. A cursory search on Amazon reported over 20,000!

No judgment to those who might use these resources, however, since we are created by God, indeed we are children of God, why not look to the Source of truth regarding who we are? No one knows us better than God and that includes ourselves.  So, let’s look to the Holy.

As we continue in the pandemic and the days get shorter and the nights seem to go on forever, I know I need some personal prayer practices that allow me to rest and reset in God.

I encourage you to join me and to grace yourself with some quiet, uninterrupted time. Just you and God time. Take 10, 15 minutes or more if you can. Use this time to breathe in deep cleansing breaths of God’s peace and exhale and release the things that cause you stress and worry. Do this a few times. Inhale, God’s love and truth. Exhale, your worries.

As you do this, refresh your soul with God truths. Breath them in. Let them settle in you. Visualize them going from your head to your heart. Let them settle in your soul – that sweet place within you where the head and heart meet. The place that the Holy dwells.

Here a some holy truths regarding who you are and how you are loved and cherished.

What marvelous love the Father has extended to us! Just look at it—we’re called children of God! That’s who we really are. But that’s also why the world doesn’t recognize us or take us seriously, because it has no idea who he is or what he’s up to.
1 John 3:1

Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out;
    you formed me in my mother’s womb.
I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking!
    Body and soul, I am marvelously made!
    I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out,
    you know every bone in my body;
You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit,
    how I was sculpted from nothing into something.
Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;
    all the stages of my life were spread out before you,
The days of my life all prepared
    before I’d even lived one day.

Psalm 139:13-16

You, my friend, are beloved, cherished and completely enough. No matter how you “feel” about yourself, the holy truth is - You are enough and you are good. No matter what you think about yourself - You are enough and you are good. No matter what anyone else tells you – you are enough and you are good. Why, because our loving Creator says so and that is the truth!

You are loved. You are cherished. You were created by God  - a loving God who loves you just as you are- no matter what. You are beloved. That, my friends, is enough.
