Be Careful...

by Michael Olson

The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it.
Psalm 24:1

Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise.
Ephesians 5:15

This verse from Ephesians sounds as if it was tailor-made for us right here and right now.

How many times have you been told, and how many times have you told others, to be careful? We know all the things we're supposed to do these days:  stay six feet apart from others; wear a face covering; cover your cough; stay home if you're sick; don't gather in large groups. We need to use our brain cells each and every day! We need to protect those we love -- our neighbors and friends -- and we also need to protect people we don't even know. The coronavirus pandemic is very real and it is not yet over.

Of course, I was reminded of an old Sunday School from long, LONG ago --

O be careful little eyes what you see,
O be careful little eyes what you see,
For the Father up above is looking down in love,
So be careful, little eyes, what you see.

I remembered five verses from my childhood but, upon further examination, there are actually SEVEN verses!  Here is the first line of the other six verses:

O be careful little ears what you hear...

O be careful little tongue what you say...

O be careful little hands what you do...

O be careful little feet where you go...

O be careful little heart whom you trust (one of the "new verses" to me)...

O be careful little mind what you think (the other "new verse" to me)...

Truth be told, we can't be too careful about much of anything any more. And remember the third line of each of those stanzas of the song -- For the Father up above IS looking down in love. The Father wants what's best for His children, and do not forget that fact, either.

Be careful...

P.S. I wanted to let you know that I will be sharing the Saturday devotion writing with Erik Carlson, Student Life Coach/Youth Director here at First Lutheran Church. May the Lord righly bless all those who read and all those who write the daily devotionals.
