A Refuge, a Shelter, and a Shade...

by Michael Olson

You have been a refuge for the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. For the breath of the ruthless is like a storm.
Isaiah 25:4 NIV

These are the words of the first and the last, who was dead and came to life: "I know your affliction and your poverty."
Revelation 2:8-9

It is Labor Day weekend. How can THAT be? Where did the summer go? In the midst of the pandemic, and the protests and unrest, and Hurricane Laura, it is indeed the beginning of September.

My thoughts and prayers are with all the people of Lake Charles, Louisiana and other cities and towns. I was watching on the TV about all the rain and wind and destruction everywhere. I have never experienced a hurricane before, and I have absolutely no desire to do so. May God watch over all those people as they rebuild and get their lives back to normal or some semblance of normal.

Today, I'm going to share one stanza of THREE different hymns having to do with the verse from Isaiah 25.

This is stanza one from Jesus, Refuge of the Weary:

Jesus, refuge of the weary, blest redeemer, whom we love,
Fountain in life's desert dreary, Savior from the world above:
Often have your eyes, offended, gazed upon the sinner's fall;
Yet upon the cross extended, you have borne the pain of all.

Here is stanza one from O God, Our Help in Ages Past:

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,
our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home.

And here is stanza two from A Shelter in the Time of Storm:

A shade by day, defense by night, a shelter in the time of storm;
No fears alarm, no foes affright, a shelter in the time of storm.
O, Jesus is a rock in a weary land, a weary land, a weary land;
O, Jesus is a rock in a weary land, a shelter in the time of storm.

May the Lord always be a refuge, a shelter, and a shade -- and whatever else we need in the storms of life.
